Purpose and Location
The Studium Urbis opened in the fall of 2000 as a resource for creative
ideas and sound design and scholarship regarding the history of
architecture and urban planning in Italy. We encourage and facilitate
collaborative and original research and design in architecture, urban
& landscape planning, visual and topographical studies, and the
history thereof in Rome and Italy. The center also strives to
disseminate research results, workshop and conference opportunities to
faculty, students, practicing professionals, leaders, policy-makers,
and the general public.
The Studium Urbis is located in the heart of Rome on the Via di Montoro

(near Piazza Farnese and Piazza Navona), and it houses an exhibition
gallery, workshop studio, and an extensive collection of reference
resources. The resources include drawing and cartographic materials,
architectural view-maps and plan-maps (including G. B. Nolli),
bibliographic and textual sources, and architectural exhibitions and
their printed components. Several workshop projects in Rome, Siena,
Perugia, Tivoli, and Central Italy are also affiliated with the Studium
Urbis Organization.

The Studium Urbis Online
The web site of the Studium Urbis, http://www.studiumurbis.org
is a digital extension of the studio's activities and includes
information on Studium Urbis exhibitions, workshops, news & events,
lectures, and research and writings on the history of urban planning in
Rome and other cities in Italy, and links to other pertinent sites. The
activities and exhibitions of the Studium Urbis have been digitized,
arranged, and displayed so that anyone in the world connected to the
internet can view the material. Because the internet allows for two-way
communication, the Studium Urbis will invite its viewers to contribute
their suggestions and comments in an effort to foster a public forum on
the ideas presented. For more information, please contact us.

Workshops, Lectures, Conferences and Exhibitions The Studium Urbis sponsors several summer study workshops for university students, courses and on-site lectures on a contract basis, gallery exhibitions, and conferences. Please consult the website, contact us via email, or telephone in Rome (o6 / 686-1191) for details.
