Dr. Richard Betts
Dr. Richard Betts joined the studio in spring 2001 with his project on Roman Renaissance palazzi and the 1748 Nolli map. Dr. Betts is a graduate of Rice University and Princeton University and is currently a professor known for his intense and insightful lectures and seminars at the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Betts has taught numerous classes on Renaissance & Baroque architectural history and theory in addition to serving as a critic on design reviews. Most recently, in the spring of 2001, Dr. Betts was a visiting scholar and lecturer with the Pennsylvania State University Rome Program. He has also held the Morgan Chair at the Allan R. Hite Art Institute (1994), was a consulting scholar for the National Historic Landmarks Survey, and previously served as the President of the Society of Architectural Historians. In addition, he has given numerous talks on Renaisssance architectural theory, such as "Structural Design & Structural Innovation in Renaissance Architecture," at the University of Virginia (1993), and "No art is perfect without mathematics': Geometry and design in the treatises of Francesco di Giorgio (1439-1501)" at the Avista-sponsored session of the 35 th International Congress on Medieval Studies (2000). Dr. Betts has curated several architectural exhibitions, chaired numerous workshop sessions, and has published several articles with a focus on Renaissance architecture & geometry and the architectural treatise/sketchbook, in particular those of Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
